Closet Organizer with Drawers

Here is another project that follows our design theme - functional, attractive with simple construction techniques.

It echos a style of drawers I saw in Portugal. The drawers have no external pulls and the drawer fronts are spaced to allow fingers to use the front as a pull.

The simple box shape with multiple drawers holds a significant amount of clothing in a very well organized space.

The size of the unit allows access with only one of the folding closet doors open.

The unit is constructed from white finished particleboard, with taped edges. Predrilled drywall screws hold the box together.

The drawers are assembled from kits, with sides & tracks. Fronts are cut from prepared door framing material. The bottoms and backs from 1/2" fir plywood.

The drawer tracks are installed on the insides of the box before assembling.

This drawing shows the sizes of the various parts.

A cutting plan helps when you get ready to cut the parts.

This drawing shows the layout of the tracks on the box insides.

The drawer kits are available from Lee Valley.

Their website includes details for the drawer construction & installation.

We recently moved into an apartment & YES, we brought our closet organizers with us. We also found a situation where a similar box of drawers solved a storage problem. The bathroom vanity only had open shelves behind doors.

To keep cost down we used simple self closing drawer slides, available locally, and scrap plywood for the back & base and left over pine for the drawer fronts.

The drawer front could have been a little wider , but the flaw is minor & hidden when the door is shut.

As before, start with a dimensioned sketch.

Do a cutting plan

And follow the manufacturers instructions for the slide installation.
