Versatile Desk

My desk is a personal workspace that has evolved over the years as my interests, techniques & projects have change.  It began as a simple student’s study desk – 3 drawers with a simple flat top & flat “leg”.

It’s first metamorphosis involved inverting the drawer unit & adding 2 small drawers for pens & various desk supplies & a sliding leaf for an electric typewriter (high tech at that time). A small bookcase supported an enlarged top.

Becoming a design desk was a major change.  A very large top – complete with drawing board hardware & a filing cabinet with drawing storage made it a welcome addition to the basement shop.  Details are shown in the article “Alcove Workshop”.

The current use keeps all the above functions and accommodates current technology with a sliding tray for a computer keyboard & a platform on casters for the computer “tower”.  The top has been downsized to 28 x 49.5” (71 X 25.5 cm) to make it more compatible with the family room.

Note the cardboard cover of the numeric pad to provide a convenient place for the mouse.

The desk has kept its ease of portability since it can be taken down into it’s main components. With portability in mind the next change will be to replace the present computer with a large laptop. The desk is very much an old friend – we have spent a lot of time together – it continues to serve as a “window into the world”.
